AP Networking is a College Board AP Career Kickstart course. It becomes available nationally in the 2027-28 school year, with a third and final pilot running in 2026-27. Students work through four units that scale outward from a single device to the global internet.

What is AP Networking?

When does AP Networking launch nationally?

College Board has said the course becomes available nationally beginning in the 2027-28 school year. A third and final pilot runs during 2026-27 at selected schools.

When is the first AP Networking Exam?

The first national exam is scheduled for May 2028, and it will be given fully digitally in Bluebook.

What is on the exam?

College Board has described two components: multiple-choice questions built on networking scenarios, and free-response questions using realistic networking artifacts and evidence. Question counts, timing, and section weights have not been published, so we do not quote any.

Does AP Networking require programming?

No. College Board states there are no specific course prerequisites, and the framework does not build the course around writing code. Students do work at the command line, which is a different skill.

How is it different from AP Computer Science Principles?

AP CSP surveys computing broadly, including programming, data, and the impacts of technology. AP Networking stays with the infrastructure: addressing, configuration, segmentation, routing, and keeping a network working.

How is it different from AP Cybersecurity?

The two overlap and complement each other. AP Cybersecurity asks how systems, applications, and data are defended across many settings. AP Networking asks how a network is designed, configured, and repaired, with security applied as one part of running it well.

Is the course hands-on?

Yes. The framework is organized around scenarios and student work products such as walkthroughs and documentation, and the exam free-response section uses realistic artifacts.

What is the AP Networking Credential?

College Board offers a credential to students who take a yearlong AP Networking course and earn a qualifying score on the exam. The qualifying score has not been published.

Does it lead to industry certifications?

College Board describes the credential as aligned with common industry certifications including CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, and Cisco CCST Networking. Alignment is not the same as award: the course supports preparation toward those certifications but does not grant any of them.
