Transformations
How it works
Transformations act on inputs and outputs in different ways. Subtracting h inside the function moves a graph right by h. Adding k outside moves it up by k. Multiplying outputs scales vertically and a negative output factor reflects across the x-axis.
Worked examples
Example 1
Describe relative to .
Shift right , reflect across the x-axis, stretch vertically by , and move up . The vertex is .
Example 2
Write the graph of shifted left and down .
A left shift replaces with and a downward shift subtracts : .
Problems
Problem 1.2.1
Describe relative to .
Show worked solution
Shift left , stretch vertically by , and move down . The starting point is .
Problem 1.2.2
Transform by reflecting across the x-axis and moving down .
Show worked solution
The resulting equation is .
Problem 1.2.3
Compare the parent graph and transformed graph . State its vertex and vertical scale.
Show worked solution
The vertex moves to and the vertical scale factor is . The graph opens upward and is narrower than at the same output height above its vertex.
