Solving by undoing operations while keeping both sides balanced, and the one place inequalities behave differently from equations.
Lesson 2.1
An equation asserts equal values. Applying the same reversible operation to both sides preserves its solution set. Distribute and combine like terms before isolating the variable. After solving, substitute into the original equation, particularly when negative signs appear.
Lesson 2.2
A literal equation contains more than one variable. Isolate the requested variable by treating the others as known quantities. Factoring can collect repeated appearances of the variable. State nonzero restrictions whenever division by an expression is needed.
Lesson 2.3
An inequality describes a set of allowed values. Adding or subtracting the same quantity preserves its direction. Multiplying or dividing by a negative number reverses the direction. An AND statement requires both conditions; an OR statement permits either one.
