Systems of Inequalities

How it works

A linear inequality describes a half-plane. Draw a solid boundary when equality is allowed and a dashed boundary otherwise. Test a point not on the boundary to choose the correct side. The solution to a system is the overlap of the permitted half-planes.

AND means intersection of the allowed regions.\text{AND means intersection of the allowed regions.}

Worked examples

Example 1

Describe the region y≥x+1\displaystyle y\ge x+1.

Draw the solid line y=x+1\displaystyle y=x+1 and shade above it. The boundary is included because of ≥\displaystyle \ge.

Example 2

Does (2,1)\displaystyle (2,1) satisfy y<x\displaystyle y<x and y≥0\displaystyle y\ge0?

1<2\displaystyle 1<2 and 1≥0\displaystyle 1\ge0 are both true, so the point belongs to the system solution.

Problems

Problem 4.3.1

Does (1,3)\displaystyle (1,3) satisfy y≤2x+1\displaystyle y\le2x+1 and y>1\displaystyle y>1?

Show worked solution

3≤3\displaystyle 3\le3 and 3>1\displaystyle 3>1, so yes. The point is on an included boundary.

Problem 4.3.2

For y<4−x\displaystyle y<4-x, is the boundary solid or dashed, and which side is shaded?

Show worked solution

The boundary is dashed because equality is excluded. Shade below the line.

Problem 4.3.3

Use the graph to describe the solution of y≥x\displaystyle y\ge x and y≤4−x\displaystyle y\le4-x. Are (1,2)\displaystyle (1,2) and (3,2)\displaystyle (3,2) solutions?

The shaded region lies above y = x and below y = 4 − x. Both boundaries are solid.
A system solution belongs to both shaded half-planes.
Show worked solution

The region lies on or above y=x\displaystyle y=x and on or below y=4−x\displaystyle y=4-x, including boundaries. (1,2)\displaystyle (1,2) satisfies both; (3,2)\displaystyle (3,2) violates y≥x\displaystyle y\ge x.

The shaded region lies above y = x and below y = 4 − x. Both boundaries are solid. (1, 2) is inside the region; (3, 2) is outside.
(1, 2) is inside the region; (3, 2) is outside.
