Algebra 2 Honors · Lesson 2.1
Zeros and Multiplicity
How it works
A factor x - r produces a zero at r. Its exponent is the zero multiplicity. Odd multiplicity crosses the x-axis; even multiplicity touches and turns. Multiplicity helps connect factored equations to a graph without expanding the polynomial.
Worked examples
Example 1
Analyze the zeros of .
has multiplicity and touches the axis. has multiplicity and crosses.
Example 2
Write a monic cubic with a double zero at and a single zero at .
The required factors are and , so .
