The Six Functions

How it works

Sine and cosine are unit-circle coordinates; tangent is their quotient. Cosecant, secant, and cotangent are reciprocals. A zero denominator makes a ratio undefined, so check the angle before taking a reciprocal.

tan⁡θ=sin⁡θcos⁡θ,csc⁡θ=1sin⁡θ,sec⁡θ=1cos⁡θ\tan\theta=\frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta},\quad\csc\theta=\frac1{\sin\theta},\quad\sec\theta=\frac1{\cos\theta}

Worked examples

Example 1

Find all six ratios for an acute angle opposite the 3\displaystyle 3 side of a 3\displaystyle 3-4\displaystyle 4-5\displaystyle 5 triangle.

Sine 3/5\displaystyle 3/5, cosine 4/5\displaystyle 4/5, tangent 3/4\displaystyle 3/4, cosecant 5/3\displaystyle 5/3, secant 5/4\displaystyle 5/4, cotangent 4/3\displaystyle 4/3.

Example 2

Which of sine, cosine, and tangent is undefined at π/2\displaystyle \pi/2?

Sine is 1\displaystyle 1, cosine is 0\displaystyle 0, and tangent is undefined because it divides by cosine.

Problems

Problem 5.3.1

At 2π/3\displaystyle 2\pi/3, find sine, cosine, and tangent exactly.

Unit circle with the terminal radius at 120 degrees in quadrant II.
Cosine is the horizontal coordinate and sine the vertical coordinate.
Show worked solution

sin⁡=3/2\displaystyle \sin=\sqrt{3}/2, cos⁡=−1/2\displaystyle \cos=-1/2, and tan⁡=−3\displaystyle \tan=-\sqrt{3}.

Unit circle with the terminal radius at 120 degrees in quadrant II. The solution adds labeled relationships.
The terminal point is (-1/2, sqrt(3)/2); tangent is -sqrt(3).

Problem 5.3.2

If sin⁡θ=5/13\displaystyle \sin\theta=5/13 and theta is acute, find secant.

Show worked solution

The adjacent side is 12\displaystyle 12 by Pythagoras, so sec⁡θ=13/12\displaystyle \sec\theta=13/12.

Problem 5.3.3

Find csc⁡(3π/2)\displaystyle \csc(3\pi/2) and state whether cotangent exists there.

Show worked solution

Sine is −1\displaystyle -1, so cosecant is −1\displaystyle -1. Cotangent is 0/(−1)=0\displaystyle 0/(-1)=0, which exists.
