Geometry Honors · Lesson 3.2
Similarity and Proportion
How it works
Similar triangles have equal corresponding angles and a common positive ratio between corresponding side lengths. AA, SAS similarity, and SSS similarity establish similarity. Areas scale by the square of the length factor.
Worked examples
Example 1
A triangle with sides is enlarged by factor . Find its sides and area scale factor.
The sides are . The area scale factor is .
Example 2
A m person casts a m shadow; a tree casts an m shadow at the same time. Find the tree height.
Similar right triangles give . Thus m, assuming level ground and parallel sunlight.
Problems
Problem 3.2.1
Similar triangles have corresponding sides and . If the smaller area is , find the larger area.
Show worked solution
The length factor is . The area factor is , so the larger area is .
Problem 3.2.2
Triangles have angles and . Are they similar?
Show worked solution
Yes, by AA. Correspondence must match equal angles, regardless of the order given.
Problem 3.2.3
A map uses cm for km. What real distance corresponds to cm?
Show worked solution
Multiply by the scale: km.
