Precalculus · Lesson 4.3
The Six Functions
How it works
Sine and cosine are unit-circle coordinates; tangent is their quotient. Cosecant, secant, and cotangent are reciprocals. A zero denominator makes a ratio undefined, so check the angle before taking a reciprocal.
Worked examples
Example 1
Find all six ratios for an acute angle opposite the side of a -- triangle.
Sine , cosine , tangent , cosecant , secant , cotangent .
Example 2
Which of sine, cosine, and tangent is undefined at ?
Sine is , cosine is , and tangent is undefined because it divides by cosine.
Problems
Problem 4.3.1
At , find sine, cosine, and tangent exactly.
Show worked solution
, , and .
Problem 4.3.2
If and theta is acute, find secant.
Show worked solution
The adjacent side is by Pythagoras, so .
Problem 4.3.3
Find and state whether cotangent exists there.
Show worked solution
Sine is , so cosecant is . Cotangent is , which exists.
