Linear Transformations
How it works
A matrix maps column vectors to column vectors. Its columns are the images of the standard basis vectors. Linear transformations preserve the origin; a translation by a nonzero vector is not linear.
Worked examples
Example 1
Apply to .
The image is , a horizontal stretch by factor .
Example 2
Give the matrix of a counterclockwise rotation about the origin.
It is because maps to and maps to .
Problems
Problem 4.6.1
Apply the counterclockwise rotation matrix to the vector .
Show worked solution
Matrix multiplication gives . Its length remains .
Problem 4.6.2
Give the matrix of reflection across the x-axis and apply it to .
Show worked solution
The matrix is and the image is .
Problem 4.6.3
Explain why is not linear.
Show worked solution
It sends to . A linear transformation must send the zero vector to itself.
