Algebra 2 Honors · Lesson 4.2
Logarithm Properties
How it works
A logarithm gives an exponent. Product and quotient rules require positive arguments over the real numbers. Apply the rules to factors, not terms of a sum. The power rule moves an exponent outside a logarithm when the relevant real-domain conditions hold.
Worked examples
Example 1
Evaluate .
Since , the logarithm is .
Example 2
Expand assuming .
Use product and power rules: .
Problems
Problem 4.2.1
Condense and state the original domain.
Show worked solution
The result is , retaining because both original arguments must be positive.
Problem 4.2.2
Evaluate .
Show worked solution
, so the value is .
Problem 4.2.3
Is a valid identity for ?
Show worked solution
No. The product rule applies to , not . For example, gives on the left and on the right.
